Anoka Co. Fair:
Premium Book and Fair Entries: You should receive your 4-H Premium book in May
or early June. This will tell you what "lots" (categories) you can show in. The rabbits are divided into "lots" by age of
rabbit and size of breed. In these, the rabbits are judged on how they compare to the ideal breed standards according to "Standard
of Perfection". (See resources) (Yes, crossbred rabbits may be shown but are not eligible for State Fair trips.) Each exhibitor
must also show in a Showmanship class. These classes are divided up by the age of the exhibitor. Here you are judged
on how you handle your rabbit and your knowledge of your rabbit and rabbits in general. There will be a separate lot for Cloverbuds
which includes Showmanship. You may also/instead exhibit a rabbit poster (size 14"x 22"- vertical). Fair
entries MUST be received at the Extension Office by July 1st.
Rabbit show: The county fair rabbit show will be on Monday, July 24 at 12:00
(noon) in the indoor show ring. Check in starts at 10:00. Interviews from 10:00 to 11:30. Last year we had over 100 rabbits
at our show and it lasted until about 4:00. You are responsible for the care and feeding of your rabbit each day it is at
the fair. The rabbits stay until Weds. July 26 at 6:00. More details in the next newsletter.
Again this year: If you show 4 class rabbits, you will be allowed to show up to 2 rabbits per lot in each of the Jr Buck and Doe lots
and the Sr Buck and Doe lots - up to a total of 4 rabbits in the these 4 lots. If you show 6 class rabbits, you will be allowed to show up to 2 rabbits per lot in each of the Jr Buck and Doe
lots, the Int Buck and Doe lots, and the Sr Buck and Doe lots - up to a total of 6 rabbits in these 6 lots.
Doe and Litter class - The doe is shown with a litter of
kits. The babies must be between 6 to 10 weeks old at show time and the doe must be owned and ID'd by May 15. In addition;
none of these rabbits can be shown in any other class except Showmanship, the doe and litter will be caged together and stay
for the entire encampment. All other "Rabbit Requirements" apply to this class also. There is no State Fair trip associated
with this class although there may be a special award. So plan your breeding to get those babies the right age! Any questions,
call Donna Abel.
Promotional Table: As a public service and in an effort to better educate the public about rabbits and their
care; we will be having a promotional table at the County Fair. This would involve 1 or 2 youth and 1 adult with 1 or 2 rabbits
taking a 2 hour shift sitting at a table just inside the entrance of the rabbit barn. We would have some information available.
You would answer questions and allow interested fair-goers to pet your rabbit(s). The shifts would be during the busiest times
while the rabbits are encamped: Tues. 4-6 PM, Tues. 6-8 PM, and Weds. 4-6 PM. We also would like to provide this service during
the open class rabbit encampment. (Thurs to Sunday evening) This is an even busier time at the fair. Please consider these
times. You can volunteer for these times when you check your rabbits in at the county fair.
Barn Monitors: Please also consider volunteering to monitor the Rabbit/Poultry Barn during the 4-H animals stay
at the Fair. We need to have 1-2 people in the barn at all times watching for the animals' safety and needs. It is especially
important to have an adult present late in the evening as the grandstand shows are finishing. This is an even bigger issue
this year - as we want to keep those tiny babies safe!! There is a detailed list of duties in the barn. You can request a
shift when you send in your fair entries.
